Latest IBM ThinkPads Are Winning New Customers

IBM ThinkPad notebook sales in the second quarter of 2003 were the largest in three years, and the third-largest quarter ever, according to the latest quarterly IDC figures for the worldwide PC market. The second quarter also marked IBM's third consecutive quarter of year-to-year growth for PCs, which coincides with the recent introductions of IBM's ThinkVantage Technologies and several new models.

Among the new models recently announced: the IBM ThinkPad R40, the first-ever IBM ThinkPad priced under $1000, demonstrating that almost all PC notebook users can now afford the quality of an IBM ThinkPad.

"With new models such as the ThinkPad T40, R40 and X31, incorporating ThinkVantage Technologies, IBM is focused on bringing innovation to the PC market," said Bob Galush, vice president, product marketing, IBM Personal Computing Division. "Customers have looked to IBM to help them decrease their total cost of PC ownership, and we delivered with lower prices and software tools that our competitors can't match."

The second quarter also saw a dramatic rise in the number of IBM ThinkPad notebooks shipped with wireless technology, doubling the prior year's numbers. The IBM ThinkPad is equipped with an innovative dual-element, UltraConnect antenna, and a significant improvement in wireless reception by embedding the antenna elements in the bezel of the display, thereby raising them to the highest point on the device.
